Mom told us this story yesterday as we were going through Zion. She said Grandpa's Uncle Samuel Barnhurst told him if he came down (to the St. George area where he lived) he would give Grandpa a car. It was a Model T.
Grandpa did not have driver's license yet, so he decided to wait until after dark to go home. When he got to the Zion tunnels, it was too dark to see, so he made a torch to hold out the window of the car. After a bit, the torch went out, and he was in total darkness. He could not see where he was driving at all, and had to guess. He drove very slowly and would hit into the wall on one side, then hit into the wall on the other. Finally he made it out.
However, right after that he got a flat tire. He did not know what to do, and he didn't have a spare. So he cut off a piece of Juniper tree and tied it under the tire somehow. He skidded the car the rest of the way home!
