Last week in church our Sacrament meeting had the theme of pioneers, as it was the 24th of July. The last speaker didn't have much time, so he said he would just tell his favorite pioneer story, the story of the three 18- year old boys who rescued the handcart pioneers at the Sweet water River in Wyoming by carrying them across the freezing river.
I didn't have a chance after the meeting to tell this speaker that Clark Allen was my great-great grandfather, but this week as we were entering the church, he was coming in with us and I told him. He thought it was very cool, and said he wanted to tell me a story.
He said that when he was on his mission, they had an investigator who told them she didn't want any more discussions, she was through and wanted no more to do with the church. The missionaries were very dismayed. They asked her if she'd just watch the video they'd brought to show her, and she agreed. Just the video, no discussion. When the video ended, she told them she'd changed her mind, and wanted to join the church. That video had touched her very much.
I thought that was a very cool experience he shared with me. I guess Great Great Grandpa Huntington rescued one more person.
